raidensnake - try vanilla Debian or Ubuntu Beta install via usb and you can add emulationstation to it with ease. The tool to use for that ISO write to installer from Windows would be Rufus and do not do dd mode or it won't work. If writing from a Linux i.e. Mint it will be the typical usb image writing software also not in dd mode. If all of that fails closely inspect bios settings for virtualization etc - (try variations including legacy boot)

Sounds like hdmi isn't being recognized - are you using debian with no graphical desktop selected as the boot medium? Try the one with xfce and see if that does the trick

Make sure it was an X86_64 kernel as well - that arm stuff isn't for this platform i.e. retropie = arm etc
