[SOLVED]Can not get serial data from the Aduino

I built and run the simple blink application and got that working
but can not get the data from the GPS device I have.
I have a serial to USB converter and I got the data I was looking for except I dont want to waste a USB port for this device.
Any tips on how to debug or test the serial I/O port?
Could it be a firmware issue. I just received the 2GB of Memory with windows 10 loaded version.
