I just recently got my Lattepanda Alpha and while switching from old to new one, I realized that my external harddrive didn't work anymore. I am using a hard drive enclosure that can (theoretically) hold up to 4 regular harddrives and connect them to a computer via a single usb cable. With the old Lattepanda I was able to connect the enclosure with one harddrive in it without a problem. With the new one the light constantly switches on and off, indicating I don't have enough power for even one harddrive. So here's the question: What are you experiences with external harddrives? Can you recommend one? Do regular external harddrives work?

Maybe I opened this thread a bit prematurely. Or my HD wanted for me to make a fool out of myself online. The HD was of course plugged into its own power source but it still didn't work. The damned thing was just going on and off all the time. Until five minutes ago, when I switched the HD into another slot of the enclosure. Now it works like a charm. I really can't say why.

3rd port: 7 Port (Powered) USB hub)
Port 1 of Hub: 5TB Hard Drive
Port 2 of Hub: Android Phone
Port 3-7 of Hub - Empty for now
I'm having all sorts of disconnects. If I try to transfer from 1 Hard drive to the other it will work for a bit then disconnect. Sometimes the whole hub disconnects, sometimes it does not. It also happens randomly if I'm not even using the ports. Looks like there's something wrong with the latte panda USB drivers? I have to do more testing. It may be having something plugged in to one of the 3 ports that's causing the issue.

Hmm this could be the case. Ill plug every hard drive into the USB powered hub and test it out. I imagine the 12V DC I'm powering the latte panda with is probably why.
The USB-C adapter it comes with is supposed to supply more power to the Latte Panda while under load but of course the USB-C port doesn't work as per all the other threads with everybody having the problems with it (Me included). What a shame. Makes the board having 3 USB ports useless
So I tested further and had all 3 hard drives plugged into the USB hub and it still has problems. It transfers for 30 seconds then stops. Sometimes it continues, sometimes it just stops. If I plug in stuff to the other 2 ports I get the 0x80070037 error sometimes.
If I plug the USB hub into the USB C port (I used an adapter) then it works!
Conclusion, Definitely a power issue. Despite having powered hard drives seperatly, It seems the latte panda cant even send enough power through the USB 3.0 ports to properly keep i/o going. Whats the fix here?

Use a separate external powered USB hub. This is a commonly-used strategy. USB thing is so "universal" (good and bad; USB-C IMHO worst) that there is no way to tell.
If you go to a shopping site hunting for an USB-based harddrive or CDROM, you'll find many of them come with their own power supply (enough complains in this power area already).

Had the same issue before. I bought WD Elements Portable External 2TB, which i connected to usb 3.0 port. For some time it worked like a charm... till it started disconnect. Obviously the main problem was lack of power on USB port. I swapped that drive for for this one with external power supply and problem gone. I'm planning to buy another one soon 
All 3 USB 3.0 ports dont work for me still. Did so much testing with 6 different drives and 2 separate hubs. They all disconnect eventually from lack of power (Even if the device has its own power supply). Im forced to load everything through the 1 USB-C port
