installing Wifi Antenna causes machine to fail to boot

Question

When I plug in the WIFI antenna then power up the machine the led turns red  but nothing else happens.  Then when I remove the antenna and power up the machine boots up like normal.  did I get a defective device or antenna?

how odd. is the connector shorting against any other components on the board? have any of the SMD components been lifted when trying to connect? this could impede startup. reflowing might fix it.
