COM port disappears after multiple Arduino sketch loads

I'm seeing the COM port (specifically COM5) disappear after loading multiple Arduino sketches, with the result that Arduino loads then fail. Seems to be indeterminate. Sometimes it fails after just a couple of loads, sometimes it takes 7 or 8 loads before it fails. Has anyone else encountered this?
