Heat sink is a passive cooler. Fan is active cooler. The best cooler is active plus passive and the bad one is only the passive cooler. I stop the fan and try 95% to 100% loading for over 20 minutes. All the 4 cores run above 70C to 75C. In fact, the cooler effect using both is near the product but not the sum.

So been running it for a few hours, ambient temperature 27C, It seems stuck on 480MHz.
Tried to reboot, but it won't go up.

So I shut it down, and after an hour, I turned it back on.
Now it runs at 1840MHz, but quickly drops, and after just 10 minutes i'm again stuck on 480Mhz.

I'm using the acrylic case.
I have seen a few people adding cooling, is that really needed?

can you check the temperature of your CPU? You can use HWmonitor http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html
My LP with 20°C reaches 80°C and it's not in a case. I reckon a case would be a problem with 20°C, not to mention 27°C.

Putting a few rasberry pi heatsinks copper and/or aluminum ones does a lot of good for heat dissipation.
In my office (say 24 degrees), LP peaks (in case) at about 75 degrees.
At home (27-30 degrees), LP peaks about 85degrees at full load. With a simple 5v fan belowing into the bottom, it runs at 44(idle) - 75(full load)

Are you looking at the clock speed while idle or under load? While idle it will clock way down to save power and then when there is a load it will clock up. After while that the CPU starts to heat up it will start to clock down again. I ran mine at 100% load for 24hrs and in the end it was running ~.7ghz. The only time I ever saw 480 was while its idle.

good point, the Cherry Trail will automatically throttle the speed depending on load. It's very normal that it sits at 480Mhz when idle.

Does anyone know if we could use the CN2 connector to power the Board?
Looks like you could plug 5v directly into the cn2 jumpers on the motherboard to supply power to the system?
Without a Board Schematic, I am unwilling to try it! Hopefully one of the developers of the board can answer this question. It would be easy to get more amperage to the board thru this connector vs the micro USB.
